ATIA Applauds Australian Government’s Investment in Sustainable Fuel Production
The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has expressed its support for the Australian Federal Government's substantial investment aimed at promoting cleaner fuel production within the country.
The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement of an AU$1.1 billion investment to accelerate Australia’s cleaner fuel production. Related initiatives will include the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The new ten-year Cleaner Fuels Programme is designed to stimulate private investment in Australian onshore production of low carbon liquid fuels such as SAF and aims to build upon the Government’s existing support through initiatives like the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Funding Initiative.
ATIA director for public policy and advocacy Ingrid Fraser commented: “This is a welcome investment that acknowledges the critical role sustainable aviation fuel must play in decarbonising Australia’s travel and aviation sectors. As demand for travel grows, it is essential that we invest in future fuels that allow us to meet that demand while staying on track to achieve our net-zero commitments.”
Fraser emphasized that for an island nation heavily reliant on long-haul aviation, the capability to produce sustainable fuel onshore is crucial, not just for reducing hazardous emissions but also for enhancing Australia’s competitive edge and connectivity in the global market.
Furthermore, sustainable fuels are essential to accommodate the rising demand while fulfilling national emissions reduction targets. SAF is viewed as the most significant leverage to decrease aviation emissions, now and in the future, particularly for Australia where long-haul flights are necessary due to its geographical layout and dispersed population.
ATIA has consistently aligned with industry counterparts to underscore the importance of proactive measures regarding SAF to secure the future of Australian travel and tourism.
