The number of tourists visiting Kashmir has reached approximately 2.95 million in 2024, which is a notable increase from 2.71 million in 2023 and 2.67 million in 2022 as per official figures.
Local Tourism Department representatives have attributed this rise to effective promotional efforts including tourism events, road shows, and robust digital and social media visibility that have drawn more visitors to the Valley. Major destinations such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg have experienced record occupancy rates, indicating a growing confidence among travelers regarding the region’s attractions.
This surge in tourism has immensely benefited the local economy, positively impacting key sectors like hospitality, transportation, handicrafts, and retail. Businesses such as hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants are flourishing, which in turn has created numerous local job opportunities. The Director of Tourism credited this achievement to the government’s emphasis on improving security and diversifying the tourism offerings to cater to a broader audience.
Promotional activities have proven critical in marketing Kashmir as a safe, vibrant, and year-round destination. From the unique experience of staying on houseboats on Dal Lake to exhilarating winter sports at Gulmarg, the region now boasts activities that cater to diverse visitor interests. Initiatives like adventure tourism, cultural events, and eco-tourism are helping Kashmir to distinguish itself in a competitive travel arena.
Looking forward, the focus remains on sustaining this growth through strategic planning and sustainable practices. As the region welcomes increasing tourist numbers, the government is also committed to protecting its delicate environment and promoting eco-friendly methodologies. With nearly three million visitors recorded in 2024, Kashmir has firmly established itself as a prime travel destination, setting a promising trajectory for future successes.
