Blenheim Palace Begins Major Restoration with Annual Deep Clean

Blenheim Palace initiates an extensive cleaning process ahead of a £10.4 million roof restoration project, ensuring the historical site's preservation.

In preparation for the monumental £10.4 million undertaking to preserve the historic architecture of Blenheim Palace, its annual deep clean is now underway.

Last year, this UNESCO World Heritage Site announced its most ambitious restoration project yet: a significant roof repair. This month, cleaning efforts focus on the plaster and gilded work on all ceilings, with a complete assessment of damage incorporated into the process.

The cleaning operation, lasting about 6-8 weeks, involves meticulous attention to over 19 chandeliers, 18 clocks, and a vast collection of historical items, utilizing only natural cleaning methods and advanced vacuum technology.

Kate Ballenger, Keeper of Palace and Collections, stated, “Each year, this massive undertaking brings satisfaction to our team, especially knowing it precedes vital restoration efforts.”

Visitors can look forward to unique experiences, including new tour options, that allow access to lesser-seen areas of the Estate while enjoying views of the Oxfordshire countryside.

Starting in 2025, notable renovations in the palace’s renowned gardens will also be realized, enhancing the visitor experience.
