Eastern Visayas Aims to Premier as the Next Venue for the Philippine Dive Experience
The Department of Tourism (DOT)’s regional office in Eastern Visayas has shown interest in hosting the next Philippine Dive Experience. This initiative, launched in November 2024 in Batangas, aims to bolster the local diving sector and position the Philippines as a top dive destination in Southeast Asia.
The event will showcase Philippine diving in a unique light, merging heritage and conservation activities to offer a deeper experience for participants. According to Karina Rosa Tiopes, the regional director of DOT, the Eastern Visayas region boasts a wide array of fascinating diving sites for international divers.
Among these is Sogod Bay in Southern Leyte, which features 30 diving locations stretching from its waters to the islands of Panaoan and Limasawa. This area, often referred to as an undiscovered diver’s paradise, provides opportunities ranging from shore dives to macro photography, thanks to its rich biodiversity, including around 150 species of hard coral and various marine fauna.
To prepare for hosting the Philippine Dive Experience, Tiopes suggests planning dive tour activities and engaging local communities. She emphasizes the need for coral restoration initiatives, particularly in areas affected by Typhoon Odette, to rehabilitate the marine ecosystem while aligning with the needs of the diving tourism sector.
In addition to promoting the beauty of Sogod Bay, holding this event will also showcase the rich culture and cuisine of Eastern Visayas, appealing to tourists and divers alike.
