Overview
Despite the current military regime, Myanmar is striving to enhance its reputation as a prime destination for global tourists.
Traffic Growth
In late-October 2025, it was reported by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office that Myanmar had welcomed over 800,000 foreign arrivals. Tourists, particularly from China, South Korea, and Thailand, are increasingly visiting major cities such as Yangon, Bagan, and Taunggyi.
Government Initiatives
The rise in visitor numbers is attributed to appealing cultural offerings, warm hospitality, and a variety of scenic spots, as per Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. However, many nations continue to issue advisories against traveling to Myanmar due to ongoing military conflicts, posing challenges to tourism growth.
Efforts for Recovery
In response, Myanmar’s leadership has been actively promoting safety and travel assurance to foreign visitors since 2023. The country has issued nearly 370,000 tourist visas by March 2023, a significant increase compared to previous years. This indicates that despite obstacles, travelers from nearby countries such as China, India, and Russia are still intrigued by Myanmar’s attractions.
Strategic Roadmap
The Myanmar Tourism Strategic Recovery Roadmap (MTSRR), launched in 2021, aims to recover tourism levels to what they were in 2019. Key components include targeted marketing, new attractions, and fostering domestic tourism. Notably, visa-free entry has been introduced for nationals from eight Asian countries including Brunei and Thailand.
Future Outlook
Myanmar is becoming more involved in global and regional travel events, showcasing its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Campaigns target those seeking immersive cultural experiences and adventure, aiming to position Myanmar as a safe and inviting destination for all types of travelers. The nation faces the ongoing challenge of appealing to travelers looking toward Southeast Asia in the current climate.
