Short-haul Destinations Gain Popularity Among Thai Travelers for May Holidays

A new trend shows Thai travelers are increasingly leaning towards short-haul destinations for their upcoming May holidays, driven by convenience and budget considerations.

Thai travelers are increasingly opting for short-haul destinations during the upcoming May holiday, according to Agoda’s recent search data. This trend reflects a growing preference for trips that are easier to plan and require less time, with a notable increase in accommodation searches for the Labour Day and Coronation long weekend from April 30 to May 4.

Domestically, Rayong has emerged as the top choice, experiencing a 44% growth in interest, followed by Pattaya at 40% and Chonburi at 29%. Other popular destinations within driving distance of Bangkok include Ko Samet and Hua Hin/Cha-am, which have also seen steady growth. This shift towards nearby escapes is attributed to rising travel costs and a preference for budget-friendly trips that minimize planning time and expenses. Rayong’s appeal is further enhanced by its agricultural tourism offerings, such as seasonal fruit orchards.

Internationally, short-haul destinations are also gaining traction. Ho Chi Minh City leads with a 134% increase in interest, followed by Da Nang at 58% and Hong Kong at 2%. Seoul, although not a short-haul destination, recorded a 49% increase, likely due to its seasonal appeal in spring.

Akaporn Rodkong, Country Director for Thailand and Indochina at Agoda, noted, “There is a clear shift towards more budget-conscious decision-making, with travelers placing greater value on simpler and more convenient trips.” Agoda offers a wide range of options across different destinations and budgets, catering to this growing demand for short-distance travel.
