Cultural Insights into Songkran Travel Habits
A recent study reveals differing travel behaviors during the Songkran festival among various nationalities and local Thai residents.
Insights on Songkran Travel Patterns
During the recent Songkran festival in Thailand, a study by the travel platform 12Go.asia tracked over 100,000 travel transactions, unveiling distinct travel behaviors among 106 nationalities. The findings indicate that while tourists flocked to popular island destinations, locals preferred journeys across the country, reflecting two different celebrations.
The analysis pointed out unique trends, such as the Chiang Mai to Pai route, where 60% of travelers were from the UK, typically booking just one to two days prior. Conversely, 63% of passengers on the ferry from Koh Chang to Koh Kood hailed from Germany, more often planning their trips up to two weeks in advance. Additionally, 40% of Israeli tourists chose the Koh Samui to Koh Phangan route.
Local Thai travelers exhibited different habits, utilizing 951 bus routes while rarely opting for ferries. These variations in travel preferences illustrate the cultural nuances in how different nationalities approach travel during the same festival.
Jorge Miranda, CEO of 12Go.asia, remarked on the findings: “100,000+ travel transactions across 106 nationalities revealed what surveys rarely capture at scale: human behavior is far more predictable, and far more cultural than most ever admitted. The data doesn’t just show where people go, it shows what each traveler needs.”
