Austrian Airlines Enhances Its Fleet with a Third Dreamliner
Austrian Airlines has added its third Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as part of its fleet modernization plan.
Austrian Airlines has added a third Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its longhaul fleet, which is slated to commence regular service on June 1. This initiative is part of the airline’s wider effort to modernize its fleet, aiming for a total of 12 Dreamliners by the end of the 2028–2029 winter schedule.
The new Dreamliner, previously registered under Lufthansa as D-ABPE, is now set to operate as OELPG after undergoing modifications and certification in Taipei. Following this, it was painted in Austrian Airlines’ distinctive livery in Teruel, Spain, and is expected to reach Vienna by the end of May.
Stefan Kenan Scheib, COO of Austrian Airlines, noted: “We are continuing the fleet renewal on Austrian Airlines long-haul routes and are pleased to welcome a total of nine additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to join the three already in service by 2028.”
Initially, the new Dreamliners will operate on routes to New York’s JFK and EWR, as well as Chicago’s ORD, coinciding with the phasing out of older aircraft, including three Boeing 767s and six Boeing 777s. Alongside this long-haul fleet update, Austrian Airlines will also renew its short and medium-haul fleet with plans to replace 17 Embraer aircraft with six new Airbus A320neo planes by 2028, focusing on two primary aircraft types: the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
