Macao Embraces High-Net-Worth MICE Within Tourism+ Strategy

This article explores how Macao is evolving as a premier destination for high-net-worth MICE events while maintaining its charm as an all-encompassing tourist attraction.

Whenever the word Macao is mentioned, many recall the casinos that earned it the nickname Las Vegas of the East at the end of the 20th century.

However, younger travelers view Macao in a different light: a destination where spectacle and tradition intertwine to create genuinely unique experiences reflecting both eastern and western nuances. The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector also recognizes Macao as a leading destination, thanks to its venues that cater to large crowds, spectacular exhibitions, and events that attract participants globally.

Recently, the Macao SAR government reported a remarkable 1,681 MICE events staged in 2025, which shows a 149% rise in attendees and an 89% growth in casual visitors compared to 2024. These milestones are a result of close alignment between the MICE sector and the government’s long-term economic diversification strategy, demonstrating how Macao has progressed beyond its previous status as Asia’s gaming hub.

No Longer in Hong Kong’s Shadow

For many travelers, especially those visiting from the 1970s to the 1990s, Macao was often just a side attraction for those in Hong Kong, characterized by its quaint charm.

Today, Macao stands proudly as a tourist destination in its own right; a recent report highlighted that Macao has surpassed its pre-pandemic visitor numbers, concluding 2025 with 40.06 million arrivals.

The Assistant Professor at Macao University of Tourism, Veronica Lam, noted:

“Macau’s position in the Greater Bay Area is stronger than its current image suggests, as it is China’s designated World Centre for Tourism and Leisure.”

Beyond Gaming

This shift leads to Macao’s pursuit of quality tourism, offering unique experiences tailored for globally conscious travelers. Over the past year, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has prioritized integrating tourism with related industries as part of its tourism + initiative.

Alongside MICE, recent developments include a significant increase in hotel offerings and more diverse events showcased at the Macao International Travel Expo (MITE).

Macao is poised for future growth and innovation, backed by robust infrastructure development and strategic promotional efforts that focus on delivering authentic experiences.

In the words of Professor Lam,

“For a city that depends so heavily on tourism, clear communication matters. Delivering on those promises matters even more. Therefore, there is a need to invest in innovative products, strengthen service quality standards, and build links across sectors.”
