Exploring The Cormorant: The Southernmost Hotel and New Gateway to Antarctica
Silversea is launching The Cormorant, a unique hotel that will be the southernmost on the planet, located in Puerto Williams, Chile, available from October 2026.
Silversea is reimagining how travelers reach Antarctica with The Cormorant at 55 South, a purpose-built, 150-room hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile that will become the southernmost hotel on earth when it opens in October 2026. Designed as the land-based cornerstone of Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise program, The Cormorant promises to make reaching the White Continent more seamless, comfortable, and experiential by turning pre- and post-cruise logistics into part of the journey.
A New Kind of Antarctic Gateway
Instead of enduring the Drake Passage both ways by sea, Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise itineraries pair a hotel stay in Santiago with a charter flight to Puerto Williams, followed by an overnight at The Cormorant and then a short hop to King George Island for embarkation. Guests returning from Antarctica will again overnight at the hotel before flying back to Santiago, smoothing the transition between polar wilderness and the real world.
Silversea President Bert Hernandez calls The Cormorant “an exciting new chapter” that extends the line’s luxury positioning ashore, offering the same hallmark comfort, personalized service, and destination immersion guests expect on board. Operating seasonally from October to March, the hotel anchors a tightly choreographed flow that cuts travel time, reduces weather-related uncertainty, and builds anticipation instead of fatigue.
Design Inspired by Patagonia, Built for Reflection
Public spaces at The Cormorant are conceived as calm, view-led sanctuaries that blend Silversea’s elegant aesthetic with the raw drama of Patagonia. Expect cozy lounges, curated gathering areas and floor-to-ceiling windows framing forest, mountains, and the Beagle Channel, encouraging guests to slow down, warm up, and process the magnitude of where they’re heading.
The Fireplace Lounge
At the heart of the hotel is the Fireplace Lounge, inspired by the region’s tradition of fire as a symbol of gathering and hospitality. A striking hearth, plush seating, and expansive picture windows create a retreat for pre- or post-expedition evenings, with fine wines, signature cocktails and light bites served as Patagonian weather rolls past outside.
150 Guest Rooms: Forest and Fjord Views
All 150 guest rooms are thoughtfully appointed to echo the feel of a Silversea suite, giving guests continuity between ship and shore. Rooms offer either serene forest views or water vistas of the Beagle Channel, bringing Patagonia’s landscapes into the frame from the moment you wake.
Interiors feature warm wood tones, earthy palettes, and handcrafted items created by Chilean artisans, celebrating local culture while keeping the mood calm and restorative.
Latitude 55 and Bar Sur: Flavours of Chile at the End of the World
Food and drink at The Cormorant are rooted firmly in Chilean and Patagonian flavours, turning each meal into a gentle orientation to place.
-
Latitude 55: Named for the hotel’s position near the 55th parallel south, Latitude 55 is the main restaurant, serving menus that showcase regional ingredients and traditions.
-
Bar Sur: Described as the social heart of the hotel, Bar Sur offers teas, Chilean cacao and pastries by day, then transitions to curated wines, pisco and cocktails by night.
Uncharted Boutique: Keepsakes from the Edge of the Map
To mark their stay at what’s billed as the world’s southernmost hotel, guests can visit Uncharted, The Cormorant’s boutique. The space focuses on locally made keepsakes and practical expedition essentials, from artisan textiles and jewellery to well-chosen cold-weather accessories.
Beyond the Hotel: Patagonia on Your Doorstep
Time at The Cormorant isn’t only about resting before or after Antarctica. Guests have opportunities to explore Puerto Williams and the surrounding wilderness through:
- Nature walks and hiking in the forests and hills that ring the town
- Kayaking and wildlife watching along the coast
- Scenic explorations that highlight Yaghan heritage, Patagonian ecology, and life at the end of the world.
All experiences are coordinated around charter flight schedules so that logistics never overshadow the landscape, delivered by staff trained in “The Silversea Way” – the line’s philosophy of personalized service, deep destination knowledge, and anticipatory attention to guest needs.
For travelers who dream of Antarctica but dread the Drake, The Cormorant at 55 South turns the journey into a layered, two-country narrative instead of a hurdle.
