Air Tahiti Nui Introduces Direct Flights Between Sydney and Tahiti Starting December 2026

Starting December 14, 2026, Air Tahiti Nui will launch non-stop flights from Sydney to Papeete, simplifying travel for Australians.

Getting from Sydney to Tahiti is set to be much easier. From 14 December 2026, French Polynesia’s flag carrier Air Tahiti Nui will commence twice-weekly non-stop flights between Sydney (SYD) and Papeete (PPT), eliminating the need for Auckland stopovers that have been compulsory for Australian travelers heading to Tahiti.

New Non-Stop Sydney–Tahiti Route: Key Details

Air Tahiti Nui’s new route signifies the airline’s return to the Australian market after a decade, and it’s a vital aspect of its strategy to enhance French Polynesia’s connectivity throughout the South Pacific.

  • Inaugural flight: Monday, 14 December 2026
  • Frequency: 2 non-stop flights per week year-round
  • City pair: Sydney (SYD) – Papeete (PPT) in both directions
  • Aircraft: Operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

According to Air Tahiti Nui, this direct service significantly cuts travel time and streamlines journeys between Australia and Tahiti compared to the current route that goes through Auckland.

Flight Schedule: Sydney–Papeete from December 2026

The planned schedule (pending airport authority approval) aims to maximize overnight flights and convenient arrivals on both sides of the Pacific.

From Sydney to Papeete (SYD → PPT)

  • Operates Tuesdays and Fridays from 14 December 2026
  • Tuesday: Departs at 8:10 PM, arriving in PPT the next morning
  • Friday: Departs at 7:10 PM, arriving in PPT the next morning

From Papeete to Sydney (PPT → SYD)

  • Operates Mondays and Thursdays
  • Departs PPT at 12:10 PM, arriving in Sydney the following day:
    • Arrival at 5:45 PM from 14 December 2026 to 27 March 2027
    • Arrival at 5:00 PM from 28 March 2027 onwards.

Tickets for the new service are on sale now, although timings are subject to final regulatory approval.

Importance for Australian Travelers

Previously, Australians flying with Air Tahiti Nui typically took the route Sydney–Auckland–Papeete, with Qantas handling the trans-Tasman leg via a codeshare. This additional segment made it longer and more complicated for shorter vacations.

The new direct service:

  • Eliminates the Auckland stopover, providing a straightforward option for east-coast travelers.
  • Lowers overall travel duration, making quick getaways and stays of 7 to 10 nights more feasible.
  • Positions Tahiti as a competitive alternative to Fiji, New Caledonia, and the Cook Islands.

In 2025, French Polynesia welcomed around 279,000 visitors, with approximately 8,165 Australians, according to preliminary ISPF data. However, Air Tahiti Nui is optimistic that direct flights from Sydney will generate new demand from Australians who viewed Tahiti as “too complicated” compared to nearer island locations.

Qantas Codeshare: More Choices

Importantly, the new Sydney–Papeete flights are intended to complement, not replace, the existing twice-weekly Auckland–Papeete flights, which will continue under the codeshare with Qantas.

CEO Lionel Guérin states: “With two direct flights per week and our codeshare agreement with Qantas, this service provides Australian travelers with enhanced comfort and additional frequencies.”

Thus:

  • Travelers from other Australian cities can continue to connect via Qantas to Sydney or Auckland, before flying with Air Tahiti Nui to Papeete.
  • Sydney travelers now have the option to choose between direct flights to Tahiti or routing through Auckland, depending on fare, schedule, and loyalty considerations.

Boost for Tourism, Cargo, and Regional Connectivity

Beyond passenger travel, Air Tahiti Nui highlights that the Papeete–Sydney route opens new freighting opportunities, reinforcing trade ties between Australia and French Polynesia. This service is deemed a strategic move to make Papeete a better-connected hub within the broader South Pacific network.

For French Polynesia, which had a record tourism year in 2025, the route adds vital capacity from a high-value market, bolstering growth in premium leisure, honeymoon, and experiential travel segments where Tahiti already captives interest.
