Thai Tourism Strategy for 2026: A Shift Towards Quality Over Quantity

Thailand's tourism strategy for 2026 emphasizes high-value tourists over sheer volume, aiming for sustainable growth and enhanced experiences.

Thai Tourism Strategy for 2026: A Shift Towards Quality Over Quantity

Thailand is focusing on a “value-led growth” strategy for tourism in 2026, aiming for a 10% increase in revenue by attracting high-spending travelers instead of just boosting arrival numbers. Following a remarkable year with 2.48 million Indian tourists, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is prioritizing longer stays and expanding promotion of lesser-known destinations to alleviate issues like overtourism in major hubs such as Bangkok and Phuket.

Insights from Nattachit Oonsiam, Director of TAT, Mumbai Office

In an interview with Travel Daily Media, Nattachit Oonsiam elaborated on the marketing plans targeted at Indian travelers. In 2025, the focus shifted towards targeted campaigns like “ASEAN + India Shoppers in Thailand”, emphasizing unique experiences that cater to evolving interests, including shopping and cultural exchanges.

Achievements and Growth

According to Oonsiam, Thailand recorded 32.97 million international visitors in 2025, of which 2.48 million were from India, marking a 17% annual increase and solidifying India as one of Thailand’s top three tourist markets.

Engagement in Tier-2 Cities

Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru remain significant sources of tourists. However, Tier-2 cities are increasingly participating, highlighting growth in Nagpur, Kochi, and Indore. To further cultivate this market, TAT is enhancing trade activities through workshops and targeted outreach.

Future Strategies: 2026 Ahead

Moving into 2026, TAT is committed to a strategy centered on quality and unique experiences. They aim to sustain a 10% growth while emphasizing luxury travel, wellness, and event-led trips.

Competitive Landscape

Oonsiam also addressed growing competitors like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, noting that Thailand’s strength lies in its diverse offerings that encompass beaches, culture, and gastronomy within one trip.

Managing Overtourism

Challenges due to overcrowding in popular spots such as Bangkok and Phuket are acknowledged, with proactive measures being implemented. These include promoting alternative destinations, managing visitor flows, and encouraging community-driven tourism to ensure that local populations benefit from tourism.

Evolving Travel Trends

For 2026, travelers are expected to seek more meaningful experiences, with greater demand for wellness and cultural activities. Travel advisors are encouraged to adapt their offerings to meet this evolving landscape.

Lesser-Known Destinations Worth Exploring

Oonsiam recommends several hidden gems in Thailand like:

  • Nan: A town rich in heritage
  • Mae Hong Son: Known for mountainous landscapes and cultural experiences
  • Trat: Offers untouched beaches and relaxed island lifestyles

These initiatives aim to foster sustainable tourism growth while enriching visitor experiences.
