Sierra Nevada Thrives as a Key Winter Tourist Attraction in Andalusia
Sierra Nevada is experiencing a booming winter tourism season thanks to abundant snowfall, leading to a significant increase in visitor numbers and hotel occupancy.
Sierra Nevada is currently in full swing, bolstered by significant snowfall that has created an average of 80 skiable kilometers on its slopes, with some days exceeding 100 kilometers. This unparalleled offering has led to a remarkable average hotel occupancy of 75%, soaring to over 90% on days like New Year’s, due to 185,000 visitors passing through Pradollano until Epiphany. Currently, over 220,000 skiers and a total of 327,000 users are enjoying the various activities and gondola rides.
The President of the government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, recently highlighted the ski resort’s prominence as a key winter tourist attraction and noted the significant increase in international market presence. Specifically, there has been a 27% rise in German visitors compared to Christmas 2024, nearly 15% from British visitors, and over 10% from French tourists.
“The recorded figures mark the end of an excellent year for the entire Andalusian tourism industry, surpassing even initial forecasts. These results reinforce the strong tourist appeal of Andalusia and its dynamism. This success is not accidental but results from a methodical approach based on planning, rigor, and compliance. There is no improvisation here, only stability and management,” Moreno stated.
During his visit to the resort, the President traveled to the Borreguiles area to witness the recent improvements made for this season, which include a new access gallery to Borreguiles, two new beginner carpets, new snow grooming machines, and the nearing completion of the new Nevasol restaurant.
“I want to emphasize, as it is essential, the improvement of the access road to the Sierra, the A-395, which began a few weeks ago. This is another historical demand that this Andalusian government is addressing, allocating 19 million euros for this project, which will also include the construction of three park-and-ride facilities and a shuttle system to manage the flow into Pradollano,” Moreno detailed.
Since 2019, Sierra Nevada has accumulated an investment of over 120 million euros with the goal of enhancing the competitiveness of the ski resort against others across the country. Additionally, according to Moreno, nearly 20 million euros more will be allocated for various projects focused on improving circular water economy and investments in water reservoirs, among other initiatives.
