UK Introduces Its First Electric Tour Boat on the Thames

The UK's first purpose-built electric tour boat, the Silver Raven, has been launched, promoting sustainable tourism along the Thames.

The UK has launched its first purpose-built electric tour boat, the Silver Raven, on the River Thames, marking a significant step towards sustainable tourism. Operated by Woods Tours in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces, the vessel provides a 40-minute guided tour that blends British heritage with modern design, offering stunning views of London’s iconic landmarks.

The Silver Raven, a 39-meter electric catamaran, is powered by a 720 kW battery bank and was built by Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall. This innovative boat exemplifies sustainable British shipbuilding, financed by the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. The vessel’s interiors, designed by Kate Woods of the Woods family, showcase British craftsmanship, incorporating eco-leather seating and a pewter bar.

Departing from Tower Bridge Quay, the tour is the only one developed in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, featuring a narrative penned by Martha Howe-Douglas, co-creator of the BBC’s Ghosts. “To see the Silver Raven set sail from the Tower, carrying those tales into the future, is very special,” remarked Howe-Douglas.

The launch of the Silver Raven not only honors the Woods family’s five generations as Thames Watermen but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions in the UK’s domestic maritime sector. The boat’s introduction is timed prior to the establishment of new electric charging infrastructure at Tower Bridge Quay, which is expected to be completed in 2026.

Tickets for the Tower of London River Tour begin at $22.50 (£18.50) for adults, with options for combined tickets and onboard refreshments. The tour promises a fully accessible experience, merging history with innovation.
