Rewind Time with SEA’s Visitor Pass Initiative

Explore Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s innovative Visitor Pass Program that allows non-flying guests to experience airport security alongside travelers.

I enjoy meeting friends at the airport and often park to walk them to security or greet them as they exit the plane. The modern experience, however, often involves a rush with little time to spare, unlike the nostalgic days of walking someone to their gate.

In 2018, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) launched the SEA Visitor Pass Program, a free initiative that enables non-flying individuals to go through security with a valid pass. After much anticipation, I finally tried it when a friend flew in from Montana, aiming to surprise them at gate C15.

The process was largely smooth and rewarding, although I am not certain I would make it a regular occurrence.

To Participate, Follow These Steps:

  1. Apply Online: Complete a brief application at this link. Remember, only 300 visitors are allowed per day, so early sign-ups are encouraged.
  2. Await TSA Approval: If accepted, a QR code will be sent via email after midnight on your visit day. If denied, reach out to the TSA for clarification.
  3. Pass Through Security: Enter through Checkpoint 4, where you’ll need a REAL ID. Pre-Check or CLEAR benefits do not apply here!

My experience was a bit complicated as I wore cowboy boots, which had to be removed for scanning. Without any luggage, I briefly panicked, feeling like something was missing. As my friend disembarked, I stood by the gate, hoping they would spot me, which thankfully, they did!

The Visitor Pass is also practical for those picking up minors, elderly family members, or anyone needing assistance. Additionally, you can explore shops and restaurants on the secure side of the airport, or enjoy watching planes as an AvGeek.

Curious about the program’s success, I spoke with Perry Cooper, Media Relations Manager at SEA. In 2024, nearly 50,000 requests were made, with about 14,800 going through with the pass. This year, that number stands at 18,125 by August.

Despite some initial setbacks, ultimately, the experience was worth it to surprise my friend. I may reserve this opportunity for special occasions only.
