Day Three of Avalon Waterways’ Cruise
As part of their Romantic Rhine journey, Avalon Waterways’ guests are currently experiencing the charms of Strasbourg, a city that showcases the essence of French lifestyle.
Located in the Grand Est region, formerly known as Alsace, Strasbourg serves as the European Parliament’s seat due to its strategic location near the German border. This vibrant college town, with its rich history dating back to the Roman camp of Argentoratum in 12 BC, is now home to over 671,000 residents.
Cycling in Strasbourg
According to Gary Marshall, CEO of Travel Daily Media, the best way to enjoy Strasbourg is by pedaling through its streets rather than being confined to a tour bus. “We took on a gentle three-hour morning cycle through Strasbourg, which led us to the magnificent Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, a Gothic masterpiece steeped in history,” he stated.
The Cathedral, completed in 1439, has seen its share of turmoil throughout history, serving as a site of conflict during the Reformation.
Strasbourg’s Astronomical Clock
One notable feature of Strasbourg is its Astronomical Clock, inaugurated in 1842 by artisan Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué. This clock boasts unique dual hands for solar and standard time, further enhanced by an artistic display of celestial movements.
While taking in the sights, the group also noticed storks, which are significant to the region’s cultural identity. These birds, once on the brink of extinction in the 1970s, have made a hearty comeback thanks to conservation efforts.
In addition to historical landmarks, the group learned about Strasbourg’s culinary delights, including its famed foie gras and delicious wines. After a full day in Strasbourg, they regrouped to continue their adventure in Ludwigshafen am Rhein.
