Exploring Europe on the Avalon Waterways: A Voyage Begins
Travel Daily Media’s Gary Marshall embarks on a remarkable journey down the Rhine River aboard the Avalon Envision, sharing experiences from Basel to Amsterdam.
Good Beginnings
From Bangkok, Gary flew via Thai Airways from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Zurich Airport for the initial leg of the journey. After spending the first night at the Radisson Blu Zurich Airport, he was greeted by the Avalon Waterways team at the lobby, assisting travelers as they prepared for their voyage to Basel.
Wilkommen in Basel
Gary noted: “It is an intriguing city: a mixture of the incredibly old and the startlingly new…” He emphasized the historical significance and modernity of Basel, demonstrating its evolution from an early Roman encampment to a vibrant metropolis.
Throughout the week, the Avalon Envision will visit ports in Germany and France before guests disembark in Amsterdam. This ship, a member of Europe’s youngest fleet, offers scenic views while immersing its guests in the continent’s rich heritage.
Must-Experience in Basel
Basel is known for its historical sites, including the Old Town (Alstadt), Rathaus (Town Hall), and the Basler Münster cathedral. Particular highlights include stunning stained glass and interesting historical narratives related to these sites.
Visitors should not overlook the city’s renowned culinary scene, especially during the Basel Herbstmesse, known for its seasonal delicacies.
