Spain is preparing for an even greater influx of tourists in 2025, following a record number of 94 million foreign visitors in 2024, representing a 10% increase over 2023, as stated by Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu.
Foreign expenditures reached EUR 126 billion during these visits, marking a 16% rise compared to the previous year. For the first four months of 2025, the spending is anticipated to hit EUR 36 billion, also 16% higher than the same period last year, with expected visitor growth of 9%.
However, the surge in tourism has spurred tensions in popular destinations, leading cities like Barcelona to implement a cessation of all short-term rentals by 2028 to alleviate housing strain.
Hereu mentioned that the government is actively addressing the uneven distribution of tourist traffic, with ongoing efforts to manage rental accommodations for tourists. “We need to persevere in deconcentrating tourism, but the good thing is that this is happening,” he added, noting the rise of environmentally sustainable tourism practices in Spain.
