JOALI Maldives Achieves EarthCheck Gold Certification for Sustainable Excellence
JOALI Maldives has earned the EarthCheck Gold Certification, signifying its commitment to sustainability in tourism.
JOALI Maldives has proudly announced its achievement of the EarthCheck Gold Certification, marking a significant milestone in the resort’s ongoing commitment to responsible travel and environmental stewardship.
As a leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for sustainable travel and tourism, EarthCheck is globally recognized for setting the standard in sustainability. The Gold Certification is awarded to tourism businesses that have maintained EarthCheck’s rigorous standards for five consecutive years, reflecting a long-term dedication to sustainability practices.
In its fifth consecutive year of certification, JOALI Maldives has showcased unwavering consistency in surpassing global best practices in essential areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and community involvement.
“From the very beginning, sustainability has been at the heart of JOALI Maldives’ story,” Shifaz Hassan, General Manager of JOALI Maldives stated. “This recognition by EarthCheck reflects the passion and purpose of our team, from the way we build and operate to nurturing our island community and preserving the natural wonders surrounding us.”
“ Desde el principio, la sostenibilidad ha sido el alma de la historia de JOALI Maldives.” (From the very beginning, sustainability has been the heart of JOALI Maldives’ story.)
At the core of JOALI Maldives’ sustainability journey lies the “Joy of Caring” initiative — the brand’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability program built around four key pillars aimed at promoting environmental preservation, supporting communities, and encouraging conscious practices.
Through initiatives like the JOALI Reef Restoration Project, the resort is actively working to protect and regenerate marine life. Over the past year, the project has engaged 535 guests through awareness sessions and reached out to 122 children through educational programs, successfully giving over 5,000 coral fragments a second life beneath the waves.
Across the island, a culture of mindful action drives every operation. Despite adding new facilities and villas, JOALI Maldives reported only a 4% increase in energy consumption and a 16% reduction in waste this year. The JOALI Glass Water Bottling Plant produced over 402,000 glass bottles in 2024, successfully eliminating single-use plastics. Sustainable practices include eco-friendly villa amenities and onsite composting, alongside partnering with local organizations for recycling and upcycling initiatives.
Every action taken embodies JOALI Maldives’ belief that true luxury can coexist harmoniously with nature, by merging design, art, and purpose in creating meaningful changes for guests, the community, and the planet.
For travelers seeking experiences that are both delightful and responsible, the EarthCheck Gold Certification serves as a trusted symbol, confirming that JOALI Maldives has undergone a rigorous, scientifically-backed, and people-centered sustainability certification process, while continuing to implement practices that conserve resources, support communities, and protect the environment.
