Gathering of AvGeeks at SEA

For several years now, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has hosted a gathering for local aviation enthusiasts, affectionately known as AvGeeks. These events take place airside, where participants can enjoy an in-depth look at airport operations.

The Day’s Excitement

Participants meet after going through security, embark on vans, and are escorted around the airfield. This alone is both entertaining and a thrilling experience, as attendees get to witness aircraft taxiing, taking off, and landing from an up-close perspective.

Throughout the gathering, which spans over four hours between runways 16L/34R and 16C/34C, attendees get to enjoy myriad aircraft, including a special sighting of the FedEx MD-11, a nostalgic hit for many. With iPhones and cameras in hand, the enthusiasts capture moments to share on social platforms.

The camaraderie among attendees is palpable, showcasing their shared passion for aviation. Many noted humorous interactions with flight crews, alongside the excitement of witnessing various aircraft, especially the numerous Alaska Airlines flights that take off during the event.

While there are many remarkable planes, one standout was an Alaska Air E-175 adorned with the special Horizon Air livery, conjuring nostalgia for flights aboard Horizon’s Dash-8s in the 1980s.
