Philippines Celebrates World Tourism Day with Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

The Philippine government reinforces its dedication to sustainable tourism, highlighting its alignment with the global theme of the year.

The Philippine government marked World Tourism Day by pledging to champion a tourism sector that brings long-term benefit to both communities and the planet.

The world marked the occasion on Saturday, 27th September, focusing discussions on the theme Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, emphasizing the sector’s potential to create positive change.

In a statement released for World Tourism Day, the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) declared: “The storms we weather remind us why transformation must be sustainable, building stronger communities while safeguarding our natural and cultural heritage.” Through responsible development and inclusive growth, the Philippines is paving the way for tourism to become both a driver of prosperity and a guardian of the future.

Additionally, the agency recognized all Filipino tourism front-liners and stakeholders for their contributions in enhancing the Philippines as a preferred travel destination.

A Call for Caution

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres remarked that tourism is a powerful driver of transformation, contributing to development while preserving cultures and customs. However, he cautioned, “tourism can also harm the very communities it celebrates. To face climate challenges and growing inequalities, we urgently need sustainable actions that prioritize people and the planet.”

Guterres stressed that the year’s theme is a call to action, advocating for investments in education and skills, particularly for women, youth, and marginalized communities. Moving towards a sustainable tourism model also requires support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, alongside climate action initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and conserving biodiversity.
