Loganair, the largest regional airline in the UK, has been awarded a contract to serve as the official transport provider for the inter-islands air service linking Kirkwall, Orkney, with the islands of Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, Westray, Sanday, Stronsay, and Eday. This decision follows a successful bid to the Orkney Islands Council, securing vital flights for island communities for an additional four years.

The contract, beginning on April 1, 2025, and lasting until March 31, 2029, marks an extension of Loganair’s current services under the Public Service Obligation (PSO) framework.

In a statement, Luke Farajallah, CEO of Loganair, emphasized the importance of the inter-island services for local residents, stating:

“The inter-island services between Kirkwall and the neighbouring islands are vital for the communities and individuals who rely on air transport to travel safely and conveniently for personal and professional reasons.”

The airline has played a crucial role since 1967 in maintaining lifeline connections to the North Isles, essential for education, healthcare, and general transportation needs. Annually, around 20,000 customers utilize these services, including the world’s shortest scheduled flight.
