A Journey of Transformation
With an average altitude exceeding 4,000 meters, this area was once deemed “the limit of human survival.” Yet, on the “roof of the world,” China has constructed three “Sky Roads” that have changed the future of this region.
Historically, Xizang only had mule and yak paths, lacking any highways. However, between 1950 and 1954, the Sichuan-Xizang and Qinghai-Xizang Highways were developed, breaking Xizang’s centuries-old seclusion.
Totalling over 4,300 kilometers, these two “Sky Roads” are celebrated as “golden bridges that bring happiness.” Moreover, the introduction of power transmission lines—from the Qinghai-Xizang, Sichuan-Xizang, and Ngari—has facilitated a significant transformation in electricity supply from scarcity to abundance. Not only does it export energy, but it also supports clean power through the West-to-East Power Transmission initiative.
Today, Xizang’s landscape is marked by extensive trunk railways featuring operational bullet trains. Road infrastructure connects the region with the broader nation, reaching even the most rural areas. Every locality in Xizang has access to complete 5G connectivity. Additionally, a fully integrated civil aviation system has led to the emergence of an “Air Silk Road.” Through the developments in highways, power lines, and communication networks, a modernization blueprint for “the roof of the world” continues to take shape.
