Government authorities and local media in Tunisia report that the country’s tourism sector experienced a significant upturn in activity throughout the first six months of this year.
According to a recent report from Agence de Presse Africaine (APA), several key indicators rose significantly during this period:
- Visitor numbers increased by 18% compared to the first half of 2024.
- There was a 25% rise in foreign currency earnings.
This growth is attributed to improved air connectivity, a resurgence in traditional European markets, and a focused tourism strategy from Tunisia.
Regions such as the northern coast, the Sahel, and the Southern Sahara have benefited, enhancing local employment and economy.
Challenges
Despite the growth, Tunisia faces challenges stemming from fierce competition with other tourist destinations like Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco, all of whom are enhancing their tourism offerings and infrastructure. Issues such as hotel renovation delays, security management, and a slow digital transition also pose challenges.
Tourism professionals are urging the government to revamp the tourism model and are anticipating a new strategic plan for 2025-2030 to address these issues and redefine Tunisia’s tourism approach.
