
Meghalaya is on a promising developmental path as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated several transformative projects totaling INR 1,087.81 crore during an event at the LARITI - International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture. Sitharaman praised Meghalaya’s progressive vision under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. She noted that ₹5,400 crore was allocated for capital investments, indicating that Meghalaya effectively utilizes funds unlike some other states.
The Finance Minister emphasized the Northeast’s potential for growth and transformation, celebrating improvements such as over 540 km of new roads and expanded optical fibre access since 2014. She commended successful initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission.
In his response, Sangma acknowledged the Union Government’s continuous support, emphasizing their goal to be recognized among India’s Top-10 States by 2032 and aspiring to achieve a $10 billion economy.
Key Projects Launched:
- 75 Digital Libraries: Targeting rural areas to enhance access to the National Digital Library, promoting a culture of reading.
- Umiam Lake Redevelopment: Transforming the lake into an eco-tourism hub, projected to attract over 127,000 tourists annually.
- Mawkhanu Football Stadium: Featuring a partnership with NorthEast United FC to establish a comprehensive football academy.
- Working Women’s Hostels: Providing safe accommodations for working women in major towns.
- Northeast Regional Campus of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs: Enhancing corporate governance education in the region.
The event also marked cheque distributions under various entrepreneurial schemes, showcasing the government’s commitment to grassroots financial empowerment. Additionally, a 2-metric-tonne shipment of premium organic pineapples was sent to LULU Retail in Dubai, exemplifying Meghalaya’s role in the global organic market.
