Shell Aviation, Accenture, and Amex GBT Unveil Avelia's Next Steps
Avelia, a significant player in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), is evolving to enhance its service to customers and boost SAF adoption.
Shell Aviation, one of the largest suppliers of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Accenture, and American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) have announced that Avelia is evolving into an industry solution featuring independent data hosting and a multi-supplier model to assist users in accessing the greenhouse gas (GHG) benefits of SAF from various suppliers, including Shell.
Avelia’s transition is carefully timed for the aviation sector. SAF is acknowledged as a key method for lowering GHG emissions, with the ability to cut emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. Nonetheless, IATA projects that SAF production will only reach 2.1 million tonnes or 0.7% of total jet fuel production in 2025.
Established as the leading blockchain-powered book and claim solution, Avelia aims to scale SAF, decrease GHG emissions in aviation, and enhance involvement in decarbonization efforts. Launched in 2022, Avelia allows companies to access SAF’s GHG benefits regardless of its physical availability in specific areas.
As of March 31, 2025, over 57 corporations and airlines have joined Avelia, executing more than 900 retirements and integrating over 33 million gallons of SAF into a global fuel network across 17 airport injection points, mitigating over 300,000 tonnes of CO2.
Avelia’s Next Steps
Avelia plans to enhance transparency, flexibility, and participation through several functionalities:
- Independent Data Hosting: The platform data will now be hosted by Accenture, providing a secure and transparent means for accessing SAF information.
- Multi-Supplier Solution: Transitioning from a shell-exclusive supplier, Avelia will facilitate access to SAF benefits from various suppliers.
- BYOS (Bring Your Own SAF) Model: This model allows airlines to track their SAF portfolio, including that purchased outside the Shell network.
- Multilateral Governance: A governance structure will be formed to allow multi-party involvement in Avelia’s operations.
Quotes:
Raman Ojha, President of Shell Aviation, stated: “This moment marks a significant milestone not only for Avelia but for the aviation sector. Avelia’s transition from a single-supplier platform to a multi-supplier industry solution illustrates how collaboration can accelerate SAF scaling.”
Evan Konwiser from Amex GBT added: “For most companies, Scope 3 emissions represent the largest share of their carbon footprint, and addressing these can be challenging. As a partner in Avelia, we strive to expand access to its environmental advantages.”
Dr. Jesko-Philipp Neuenburg of Accenture emphasized: “Transitioning Avelia to a multi-supplier platform is a crucial step in scaling SAF in aviation and fortifying industry collaboration. We are committed to ensuring data transparency and control for our customers.”
