Marbella, one of Spain’s most iconic tourist destinations, has launched an ambitious security initiative for its beaches during the busy summer of 2025. The aim is to provide safe, clean, and well-maintained beaches for both residents and visitors during peak tourist season.

For the first time, the city council has established a dedicated Local Police unit exclusively for coastal control and surveillance. This unit, comprising eight officers patrolling on quads, focuses on enforcing municipal regulations, preventing dangerous behaviors, and deterring unauthorized activities. Additionally, 20 Civil Protection volunteers will conduct health and rescue tasks alongside “boogies,” jet skis, and quads, ensuring quick responses to emergencies.

The security plan also includes 28 specialized firefighters trained in underwater rescues, capable of intervening in difficult-to-access locations such as coves or rocky areas, thereby enhancing the response capacity in aquatic incidents. Moreover, technology such as drones is being deployed on certain beaches to monitor situations in real-time, reflecting the trend observed in leading international tourist destinations.

The Marbella council’s efforts extend to awareness campaigns in multiple languages, proper signage, and monitoring the use of nautical devices to mitigate risks and protect the marine ecosystem. The collaboration among various agencies and investment in advanced technology places Marbella at the forefront of maritime safety compared to other Spanish tourist locales like the Balearic Islands, the Levant coast, and Cádiz, which also maintain robust beach surveillance and protection systems.

In terms of beach quality, Marbella boasts high standards of cleanliness, with many certified with the Blue Flag, signaling its environmental, safety, and service standards. Tourist feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with 85-90% rating cleanliness, upkeep, and security favorably. However, overcrowding in popular areas remains a challenge, prompting authorities to manage capacity and protect the coast.

With an estimated influx of 2.7 million tourists this summer, Marbella reaffirms its commitment to providing safe, sustainable, and high-quality beaches, solidifying its status as a preferred destination on the Costa del Sol. Investments in innovation, qualified personnel, and environmental protection demonstrate the city’s priorities for the safety and well-being of everyone enjoying its coastline.
