Geoff McGeary, a Prominent Figure in Australian Travel, Passes Away

The influential figure in the Australian travel sector, Geoff McGeary, has passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

APT Travel Group has announced the passing of their corporate patriarch Geoff McGeary. McGeary, a key figure in the Australian travel sector, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 18, just short of his 84th birthday.

He steered APT Travel Group for over sixty years before retiring in January 2024. The family has requested public donations to the OneTomorrow Foundation instead of flowers for Parkinson’s disease research.

Phil Hoffmann, founder of Phil Hoffmann Travel, remarked: “A true legend that has left an indelible mark on the industry.** He was a pioneer and icon in the travel field who continuously sought new opportunities.

Following Geoff’s departure in leadership, his children Robert and Lou Tandy now co-own APT Travel Group. Lou expressed confidence that APT would continue to innovate just like in the days of her grandfather and father, stating:

“Part of the culture of the business will be to have a go and try things. That is part of the way our father lived, and life is for living, to get out there, seek to improve and if there are mistakes, learn from them and do better next time.”

Geoff transformed his father’s small bus company into a major player in global tourism, and his legacy lives on through the company he nurtured.
