On Thursday, June 12, 2025, an Air India flight bound for London tragically crashed just after its departure from Ahmedabad airport, carrying 242 individuals including passengers and crew members. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the pilot issued a mayday call just before the crash.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8, was transporting 230 passengers and 12 crew. Among them were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. The plane struck the UG hostel mess of BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar.
Reports indicate that at least 30 individuals sustained injuries; this included students who were in the mess for lunch at the time of the incident. Expert commentary suggests that while the take-off appeared normal, multiple bird strikes might have led to the dual engine failure of the aircraft, highlighting potential aviation operational challenges around residential zones.
