Southwest Airlines Implements New Bag Fees

Southwest Airlines introduces fees for checked luggage, moving away from its former 'Bags Fly Free' policy.

Southwest Airlines has transitioned from its long-held slogan of “Bags Fly Free” to implementing checked bag fees effective May 28, 2025. All new bookings will incur a fee of $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for a second.

This policy change applies to all tickets purchased after this date, while travelers with itineraries booked prior will still benefit from the free checked luggage offer.

For decades, Southwest’s reputation hinged on this cancellation-free service, yet a recent clash with activist investor Elliott Investment Management prompted changes in their pricing strategy. They also unveiled a basic economy fare, and integral updates in bag fees.

Under the new fee structure, only elite members and those holding specific credit cards may retain some level of free baggage allowance. Specifically, A-List Preferred travelers maintain their right to two complimentary checked bags after meeting the criteria of either 40 qualifying one-way flights or a total of 70,000 tier qualifying points in a single year. Meanwhile, A-List elite passengers and cardholders will see their allowance reduced to just one free bag.

In line with industry practices, Southwest’s new policies align with the standard luggage charge seen among major U.S. airlines. Travelers should prepare accordingly to ensure smooth travels in the face of this adapted fee structure.
