Cambodia Aims to Attract More Muslim Tourists
Following a notable increase in foreign tourists, Cambodia is focused on appealing to Muslim travelers by enhancing facilities and services.
Following a 23% increase in foreign tourist numbers in 2024, Cambodia is striving to welcome a larger influx of Muslim tourists this year.
While China remains the primary source market, tourism authorities aim to attract travelers from Arab nations for a more balanced demographic.
Out of 6.7 million foreign visitors to Cambodia in 2024, about 7.3% hailed from the Middle East, representing a 20% increase from the previous year.
Notably, Muslims from Indonesia contributed over 123,000 visitors within the last year.
As of January 24, Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism has formed teams to develop strategies aimed at enhancing the country’s appeal to Muslim tourists.
Making the Necessary Adjustments
Although predominantly Buddhist, Cambodia is home to significant Muslim populations, particularly in Phnom Penh and Kampot, where Cham Muslims maintain a unique culture that attracts tourists seeking immersive halal experiences.
To meet this demand, major hotels in urban areas are now equipped with kitchens to prepare halal foods and provide prayer spaces amongst their amenities.
According to Chhay Sivlin, the president of CATA, efforts are underway to improve facilities for Muslim tourists, with plans to establish prayer rooms at airports and offer culturally sensitive services along with halal-compliant menus in restaurants.
Sivlin emphasized: “Many Middle Eastern travelers are high-spending tourists who can contribute significantly to the national economy.”
