IATA Reports Remarkable Increase in Global Air Cargo for 2024
The International Air Transport Association reveals a significant surge in air cargo demand and capacity for the year 2024.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced data regarding the air cargo market performance for the entire year of 2024. The results indicate that global demand has surged, achieving an increase of 11.3%, with international operations making up 12.2% of this figure compared to the previous year.
According to the report, demand for air cargo has exceeded the historic volumes recorded in 2021. Additionally, the overall capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), rose by 7.4% in 2024.
Notably, IATA’s Director-General, Willie Walsh, remarked:
“Air cargo was the standout performer in 2024 with airlines moving more air cargo than ever before. Importantly, it was a year of profitable growth. Demand, up 11.3% year-on-year, was boosted by particularly strong e-commerce and various ocean shipping restrictions.”
Year-End Performance
In December 2024, air cargo demand maintained strong performance levels:
- Global demand exceeded the December 2023 levels by 6.1%.
- Year-over-year demand from international operations grew by 7.0%.
- Cargo yields were noted to be higher by 6.6% than December 2023.
Performance by Region
- Asia-Pacific: 14.5% growth
- North America: 6.6% growth
- Europe: 11.2% growth
- Middle East: 13.0% growth
- Latin America: 12.6% growth
- Africa: 8.5% growth
Looking Forward to 2025
IATA projects a moderated growth of 5.8% for 2025, aligning with historical metrics. Walsh highlights a positive outlook, yet notes the air cargo industry must adapt to evolving global trade challenges.
