Introducing Viking Libra: The First Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship
Viking sets a sustainable milestone in maritime transport with its first hydrogen-powered cruise ship.
The cruise industry is poised for a transformative advancement as Viking, in collaboration with Fincantieri, launches the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship named Viking Libra. This innovative vessel is set to debut in late 2026, marking a pivotal step towards eco-friendly travel.
Zero Emissions: A Game-Changer for Maritime Transport
Currently under development at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, Viking Libra incorporates a hybrid propulsion system that utilizes liquefied hydrogen combined with advanced fuel cells. This technology enables the ship to operate with zero emissions, allowing it to access some of the most sensitive ecological zones globally. The hydrogen-powered solution, created by Isotta Fraschini Motori, a subsidiary of Fincantieri, has the potential to deliver up to six megawatts of power, establishing Viking Libra as a leader in sustainable cruising.
Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, expressed his pride in this groundbreaking project, noting, “Viking made the principled decision to invest in hydrogen, which offers a true zero-emission solution. We look forward to welcoming the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship to our fleet in 2026.”
Viking Libra’s Sister Ship: Viking Astrea
After Viking Libra, the company plans to roll out another hydrogen-powered ship, Viking Astrea, expected to be delivered in 2027, further emphasizing Viking’s dedication to building an eco-friendly fleet. Together, these vessels aim to redefine standards for sustainable cruising and lead future innovations.
A Small Ship with Big Impact
Viking Libra, classified as a small ship, promises an intimate and luxurious experience for up to 998 guests across 499 staterooms. Despite its compact size, it will offer modern features that complement Viking’s award-winning fleet design and incorporate cutting-edge eco-technology.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, noted, “With Viking Libra, we are not only delivering the world’s first cruise ship powered by hydrogen stored onboard but also reinforcing our commitment to shaping the future of sustainable maritime transport.”
Viking’s Bold Expansion Plans
Beyond Viking Libra and Viking Astrea, the company remains committed to its long-term growth strategy, announcing contracts for two additional ocean ships slated for delivery in 2031, with an option for two more by 2033. By 2031, Viking’s ocean fleet is expected to expand to 23 ships, accompanied by its river fleet, which aims to reach 110 ships in 2028.
