The Rising Popularity of Cruises Among Global Travelers

Exploring the reasons behind the increased interest in cruises post-pandemic.

Over the last three years since the COVID-19 pandemic calmed down, there has been a noticeable uptick in the number of cruise bookings worldwide.

This trend has surprised many, yet it has been embraced by both travel professionals and adventure-seekers as it presents a distinctive method of exploring the globe. Cruise itineraries cater to all demographics, irrespective of age or personal preferences.

Today’s report delves into the underlying reasons and trends that are fueling the growing fascination with cruises.

Cruise Market While not yet back to pre-pandemic levels, the cruise industry continues to thrive.

Current State of the Global Cruise Market

According to the Horizon Databook by Grand View Research for 2024, the cruise market generated a whopping US$8.87 billion in revenue last year. North America led the way, with Americans and Canadians making up 50.1% of the total cruise market, followed closely by the UK, Japan, and Brazil. However, the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE, is emerging as a significant player in the sector by 2030.

Analysts state that with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.9%, the global cruise market could reach up to US$18.35 billion in revenue by the end of the decade.

While ocean cruises dominate the landscape, river cruises are gaining traction in Europe, South, and Southeast Asia. Luxurious cruise offerings from well-known hospitality brands like Aman and Four Seasons are attracting attention as well.

Shifting Demographics in Cruise Travel

Recent statistics suggest that the average age of cruise passengers has notably decreased over the past five years. In early 2024, the demographic of passengers aged between 30 and 59 formed 53% of cruisers, with the average passenger age dropping from approximately 60 to just 46. The proportion of passengers over 60 has also diminished to 32%.

Interestingly, there’s been a surge of Gen Z travelers eager to experience cruising, at 9.1% in 2024, and this figure is likely to increase.

Randy Marsden, head of cruise at Fora Travel, commented:

“People who once thought cruising wasn’t for them are now discovering products tailored to their interests on cruises, including innovative offerings from established lines.”

Blending Entertainment with Comfort

Cruising has evolved, becoming a competitive alternative to traditional holiday accommodations. According to Patrick Scholes, travel and leisure analyst at Truist:

“Cruise companies are thriving while other travel sectors struggle, thanks to attractive prices relative to land-based vacations and elevated service levels.”

As cruisers embrace new attractions onboard—including spectacular shows and dynamic amenities like water slides and zip lines—the misconception that cruises are slow and tedious continues to fade.

In interviews, Michael Goh, president of StarCruises, stated:

“During the pandemic, with limited travel options, people began choosing cruises and quickly realized how exciting onboard amenities are.”

This continued evolution in offerings suggests that cruise lines will further enhance their appeal to a younger audience while maintaining diverse activities suitable for all age groups.
