PONANT Explorations has announced a groundbreaking journey for its luxury icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot. This ship is set to undertake a complete circumnavigation of Antarctica from January to March 2028, starting from Ushuaia. This expedition marks a pioneering venture for a cruise ship.

Unique Expedition During this unprecedented journey, Le Commandant Charcot will navigate nearly 18,000 kilometers of coastline. The journey promises a thrilling adventure through largely uncharted regions of the White Continent.

The ship will depart Ushuaia heading west toward Hobart, Tasmania, with an itinerary that outlines a two-day stop before returning along the eastern coast of Antarctica.

This innovative expedition is led by Captains Etienne Garcia and Patrick Marchesseau, who are seasoned experts in navigating polar waters with PONANT’s fleet.

Advanced Design

Designed for extreme conditions, Le Commandant Charcot features a hybrid electric engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), ensuring minimal environmental impact. It meets the highest safety and environmental standards while providing a platform for polar expeditions, from Zodiacs to snowshoe hikes.

This voyage also aims to honor the legacy of legendary polar explorers. Guests will discover historical remnants of past expeditions as they traverse these magnificent landscapes.
