United Airlines Initiates Adelaide to San Francisco Route; Expands Offerings to Southeast Asia
United Airlines is set to launch the first direct flight from Adelaide to San Francisco starting December 2025, enhancing connectivity and travel options.
A New Connection Between Australia and the United States
South Australians are gearing up for a significant aviation milestone as United Airlines plans to start the first direct flight from Adelaide to San Francisco. The inaugural flight is set for December 11, 2025, presenting a landmark opportunity for both leisure and business travel, further establishing Adelaide as a key city for international connections.
Operating Schedule
This seasonal service will operate three times weekly—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—using United Airlines’ modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which accommodates 257 passengers in various comfort classes. Departures will take off at 2:55 PM, arriving in San Francisco on the same day, with return flights landing in Adelaide at 9:30 AM.
With this route, Adelaide passengers can easily connect to over 75 destinations across the US, making travel more accessible.
United Airlines’ Expansion Plans
Adding Adelaide to its network makes United Airlines the sole carrier offering direct flights to four major Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and now Adelaide. This expansion enhances connectivity by nearly 25,000 seats annually between Australia and the US.
According to Sam Shinohara, United Airlines’ Managing Director for APAC Airport Operations, “Direct flights are a big factor in people deciding where to travel. This game-changing flight makes United the only airline to offer nonstop service to four major Australian cities, enhancing travel options for more Australians than ever before.”
Impact on South Australia’s Tourism
Zoe Bettison, the SA Tourism Minister, hailed the announcement as a collaboration with transformative potential for South Australian tourism. “South Australia has been acknowledged as one of the most hospitable regions globally; this route underscores our state’s increasing appeal,” she stated.
Brenton Cox, Managing Director of Adelaide Airport, emphasized the commitment to ensuring the service’s success, looking forward to possibly establishing a year-round route in the future.
Expanding Opportunities in Southeast Asia
Alongside the Adelaide route, United will also initiate direct flights to Bangkok, Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam starting this October, emphasizing their growth strategy across Asia. This strategic decision showcases United Airlines’ dedication to expanding international travel behaviors while fostering deeper ties between continents.
As these new routes take off, the future of international travel looks promising for both Australia and the Pacific region.
