In a significant development for the maritime travel sector, the MSC Group’s Cruise Division has inaugurated the new MSC Barcelona Cruise Terminal at the Port of Barcelona. This event aligns with the arrival of the EXPLORA II, the second ship from the luxury travel brand Explora Journeys.
Celebrating a Vision of Innovation and Sustainability
A ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by notable figures such as Jose Antonio Santano Clavero, Spain’s State Secretary for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, underscored the terminal’s role in promoting sustainable tourism. Vago remarked on MSC Group’s commitment, stating, “The new terminal is not just an investment in modern port infrastructure but demonstrates that we are aligned with the city’s strategy for a more balanced and sustainable model of tourism. We look forward to this new chapter as our guests enjoy the benefits that this innovative cruise facility brings.”
Designed with Elegance, Comfort, and Sustainability
Designed by the prestigious Catalonian architectural firm Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, the terminal is a masterpiece that embodies the elegance and service MSC guests enjoy onboard. Its key features include:
- Seamless passenger experience: A retail area, spacious waiting lounge, and exclusive VIP lounge with stunning views enhance the pre-boarding process.
- Artistic design: Ceramic cladding inspired by Barcelona’s Gaudi heritage adds a local flair.
- Environmental focus: Featuring solar panels, optimized lighting, and a rainwater collection system, the terminal has earned Gold LEED Certification for energy efficiency.
By 2027, plans for shore-to-ship power connectivity will enable docked ships to turn off engines and connect to the local power grid, thereby eliminating emissions in port.
A Hub for Mediterranean Luxury Cruising
This summer, MSC Cruises will operate five ships departing from Barcelona, including MSC World Europa and MSC Seaview, showcasing the terminal’s vital role in Mediterranean cruising.
The luxury vessel EXPLORA II will make regular port calls, providing routes that explore:
- Sardinia’s sun-soaked beaches
- The vibrant harbors of the French Riviera
- Italy’s storied coastlines
Each voyage offers a blend of relaxed luxury and immersive cultural experiences, featuring refined European elegance and ocean-inspired wellness. The MSC Barcelona Cruise Terminal stands as a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and modern design, enhancing the cruising experience and enriching Barcelona’s tourism landscape.
