The Waverley, the last operational sea-going paddle steamer, is set to make a comeback to South Cornwall and South Devon this summer, marking its first visit to the English Riviera in decades.
From August 28 to September 1, Waverley will offer a series of cruises from various ports including Penzance, Falmouth, Fowey, Plymouth, and Dartmouth. This summer marks a new chapter in Waverley’s journey, with Torquay included as a destination for the first time.
Captain Dominic McCall commented: “After a warm reception last year, I am thrilled to announce that Torquay will be part of our cruise schedule this summer.
“In 2024 we received a fantastic welcome when Waverley visited the South West with tickets selling out as locals and visitors flocked aboard.”
“2024 saw Waverley in Fowey harbour, a scene many will cherish with Kingswear Castle’s sight alongside it.”
Additionally, Carolyn Custerson, CEO of English Riviera BID Company, stated: “The return of the iconic Paddle Steamer Waverley is uplifting news for our local tourism economy, providing a unique opportunity for both tourists and locals alike.”
On August 30, Waverley will call at Torquay at 12:30 PM, followed by an afternoon cruise along the South Devon coast, showcasing scenic views of Dawlish and Teignmouth before heading to Dartmouth.
Passengers aboard Waverley will experience the charm of a steamship, with opportunities to visit the engine room and learn about the ship as it sails along the picturesque coastline.
