Tourism Brings Prosperity to Villages in North Philippines

Increasing interest in the Northern Philippine villages leads to economic benefits through cultural and ecotourism initiatives.

The recent initiatives by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) have yielded positive outcomes for the villages in the Northern Philippines.

Thanks to the efforts by the DOT-Cordillera Office, increasing villages have shifted to cultural and ecotourism, attracting visitors eager for a peaceful experience in nature.

Previously, La Diyang Haven in Tuba, Benguet, was the sole eco-tourism venue in the area, which worked with nearby attractions to provide a comprehensive tourism experience. Cristina Tolero, the head of La Diyang Haven, noted that these inclusions are beneficial for everyone involved.

“We offer loop tourism services that enhance activities for visitors and allow more of us to benefit while sharing our practices,” said Tolero.

This collective destination now offers experiences where visitors can connect with nature, walking through lush forests and enjoying meals made from locally sourced organic produce. Cultural presentations featuring Ibaloi dancers in traditional clothing are arranged for scheduled tourist visits.

Acceptance Brings Benefits
DOT regional director in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Jovita Ganongan, expressed gratitude for the growing acceptance of tourism by villagers, allowing tourism appreciation. She highlighted the Department’s search for The Best Tourism Village, which is encouraging indigenous peoples in the area to showcase their cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Despite the region’s many scenic sites, attracting tourists requires residents’ readiness and community willingness for sustainable practices. “The issue of acceptance and willingness to open up is being addressed through our initiatives, as community members express their readiness to welcome outsiders and showcase their places’ beauty,” shared Ganongan.
