Saudi Arabia is making strides in luxury rail travel with the introduction of the Dream of the Desert Train, a five-star experience destined to redefine high-end tourism in the region. Developed in collaboration with Italian hospitality company Arsenale, this ultra-luxurious train journey promises an immersive experience traversing breathtaking landscapes.

The project stems from a 2024 agreement between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Arsenale, making Saudi Arabia a key player in the global luxury rail market. This luxurious train comprises 14 carriages and features 34 beautifully designed suites, ensuring an intimate travel experience.

This venture aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the nation’s economy and position it as a premier travel destination globally.

A Luxurious Destination on Rails
SAR has stressed that the Dream of the Desert Train offers more than just transport; it is a five-star destination itself. Designed by Aline Asmar d’Amman and her studio, it harmonizes Saudi cultural heritage with modern luxury. The interior design draws inspiration from local desert landscapes and traditional Saudi elements, aiming to create a space enriched with depth and authenticity.

Route Through History and Culture
The train will operate on SAR’s Northern Railway, embarking from Riyadh and passing through historically significant areas of the Kingdom. This experience will be enhanced by a partnership with the Ministry of Culture, which will provide curated cultural programming for passengers, allowing them to partake in the Kingdom’s rich history, art, and cuisine.

A New Era in Luxury Train Travel
Saudi Arabia is eager to enter the ranks of countries offering elite train travel experiences alongside well-known ventures like the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and Maharajas’ Express. The Dream of the Desert Train aims to attract affluent travelers and establish a new benchmark for luxury tourism in the Middle East.

Looking Ahead
Although the initial operations will be along the Northern Railway, there are speculations about future expansions to significant destinations such as AlUla. SAR has also suggested the potential for international routes, connecting to other Gulf Cooperation Council countries, ultimately developing a luxurious regional train network.
