Malaysia Aviation Group Transfers MASwings to Sarawak State

The Sarawak government is rebranding MASwings as AirBorneo and will operate it as a full-service airline.

Malaysia Aviation Group has finalized the agreement for transferring its airline, MASwings, to the Sarawak state government. The deal is anticipated to conclude by the end of the year, with details about financial transactions remaining undisclosed. This follows a memorandum signed with the Sarawak-based Hornbill Skyways on October 27, 2023, for acquiring a majority stake in MASwings from MAG.

“The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with MAG working closely with all stakeholders, including shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to ensure a seamless transition and compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks,” MAG stated.

“By taking this strategic step, we are positioning Sarawak as an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN, opening doors to new opportunities and fostering greater connectivity and accessibility to both domestic and international destinations,” state premier Abang Johari Tun Openg mentioned.

As of the transfer, MASwings will continue its operations uninterrupted as it falls under the purview of MAG until the transition is official. State-run media has reported that the Sarawak government plans to rebrand MASwings as AirBorneo, and the airline is set to function as a full-service carrier.
