Thailand Positions Itself as a Leading LGBTQIA+ Travel Destination

Thailand aims to attract LGBTQIA+ travelers with a new marketing initiative supported by Marriott Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched the Amazing Thailand Out There event to promote the country as a premier destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers on February 11. This event represents a significant step in TAT’s initiative, supported by Marriott Thailand, to highlight the country’s hospitality and cultural richness.

This initiative coincides with the recent enactment of Thailand’s Equal Marriage Act in January 2025, solidifying its reputation as a leader in LGBTQ+ rights. The LGBTQ+ travel market is projected to generate $1.5 billion in spending by 2025, positioning Thailand fifth globally in tourism impact. TAT is strategically targeting this burgeoning sector.

Driven by Insights

TATA governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool emphasized the importance of the event, stating:

“This initiative is shaped by insights from the Amazing Thailand LGBTQ+ Focus Group sessions held late last year in Phuket, Bangkok, and Koh Samui. These discussions helped us refine our strategies to better serve LGBTQ+ travelers while strengthening opportunities for Thai tourism businesses.”

Marriott International vice-president for Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar, Brad Edman, expressed his excitement:

“W Hotels proudly supports celebrating diversity in thought, culture and experiences, and amplifies conversations by giving marginalized voices a platform and moving culture forward with vibrant celebrations of LGBTQIA+ rights, equity and inclusivity.”
