Royal Caribbean International has entered a new collaboration with the MARES Centre as of January 30, aiming to bolster its commitment to sustainable practices and Nature conservation.

This partnership is centered around the restoration and conservation of coastal ecosystems in Mahahual, Quintana Roo.

  • The agreement is part of Royal Caribbean Group’s SEA the Future initiative, which is designed to promote vacation experiences in a sustainable manner, contributing positively to communities and encouraging innovation.

Significant Investment

Royal Caribbean will allocate $50,000 for ecosystem restoration and educational endeavors.

  • The initiative encompasses a detailed project aimed at restoring mangroves, dunes, and seagrass beds, which are vital for conserving coral reefs and various marine species.
  • The objective is to rejuvenate 20 hectares of crucial ecosystems, including restoring hydrological flow in mangroves and replanting native coastal species.

Community Empowerment

The partnership emphasizes local hiring to strengthen the community’s economy through direct employment and foster involvement in conservation efforts.

  • A robust community education and training initiative will equip locals with sustainability knowledge and tools for ecosystem renewal, offering workshops for children and training for local women in diving and marine conservation.

Restoration activities are expected to commence this year after planning and site selection are finalized, with ongoing updates on the partnership’s achievements to follow.
