Digi Yatra is evolving as a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) based system deploying face biometric technology for seamless airport passenger processing. Since its introduction in December 2022, it has expanded from three airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi to 24 airports nationwide.
Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, stated:
“2024 was a defining year for Digi Yatra as it became a nationwide digital ecosystem reshaping how Indians experience air travel. Beyond technological advancement, this year has been about building trust. We poured our resources into communication and campaigns on social media to address passengers’ security concerns and explain our Decentralized Ecosystem based on Self-Sovereign Identity, setting new standards for responsible data management. In the future, we will continue to expand by adding four more airports early in 2025. Our aim is to solidify our presence domestically and internationally, striving for a more integrated and secure global travel ecosystem.”
Digi Yatra has registered over 9 million active users, averaging 30,000 app downloads daily, and has facilitated more than 42 million seamless journeys. In collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it introduced the ‘IATA One-ID X Digi Yatra India’ initiative, which enhances international travel experiences.
To better serve users, Digi Yatra plans to support all 22 official languages in India by March 2025, ensuring that language is not a barrier in using the app. Additionally, they are targeting an international pilot project for travelers with electronic passports, aiming to demonstrate the platform’s robust security features while emphasizing data privacy.
