South Korean authorities have confirmed that all 175 passengers and four crew members aboard Jeju Air 7C2216 perished in the tragic flight incident at Muan International Airport. This event now stands as South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster, with the death toll eclipsing that of the Asiana Airlines crash in Mokpo in 1993, which claimed 60 lives.
Mourning Period Declared
Acting President Choi Sang-mok has declared a seven-day mourning period for the victims, during which flags at all government buildings will be flown at half-mast.
Details of the Crash
Various emergency teams have recovered the aircraft’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders to assist in the ongoing investigation. The flight experienced significant issues, with its landing gear failing to deploy. This led to the plane skidding along the runway for an extended period before hitting a barrier and erupting into flames upon impact.
Victim Identification
Among the deceased is 49-year-old Thai national Jongluk Doungmanee, who was returning from a family visit in Thailand. The identification of remaining victims is ongoing.
Survivors
Rescue operations revealed that from the 179 on board, only two crew members were found alive with severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Official Statements
Jeju Air and Boeing have both expressed their condolences while emphasizing that the cause of the accident is still under scrutiny. They have committed to fully cooperating with the investigations by the relevant authorities.
