Severe Weather to Disrupt Travel in the United Kingdom for New Year

Inclement weather including rain, snow, and strong winds is anticipated to cause significant travel disruptions across the UK as the new year approaches.

Rain, snow and strong winds are forecasted to sweep across the UK as 2025 begins, with a series of weather warnings issued nationwide. The Met Office has alerted travelers to the potential for disruptions on New Year’s Eve in northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with severe conditions expected to spread to the rest of the UK on New Year’s Day.

A warning for rain and snow is currently in place for much of Scotland, and deteriorating weather is predicted for Monday through Thursday throughout the UK. On New Year’s Eve, localized flooding could occur with 100-140mm (3.9-5.5 inches) of rain expected in parts of western Scotland, alongside additional snow in northern regions.

Heavy rainfall is also anticipated across England, Northern Ireland, and Wales, with particularly severe downpours in Wales. Windy conditions are expected everywhere, particularly blustery in southern England.

Weather Warnings in Effect

  • Northern Scotland: Yellow warning for rain and snow from 00:00 GMT on Monday until midnight on Tuesday. A separate snow warning for the Orkney Islands from 05:00 GMT until midnight on Tuesday.
  • Northern England: Yellow warning for wind from 07:00 GMT until 23:00 GMT on Tuesday. A separate wind warning covers Northern Ireland from 06:00 GMT until 19:00 GMT.
  • Northern Ireland & Northern England: Yellow warnings for snow from Wednesday until midnight, with additional wind warnings covering most of England from 09:00 GMT until 06:00 GMT on Thursday.
  • Wales: Yellow warning for rain from 09:00 GMT until 21:00 GMT on Wednesday.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has advised residents in the North West and Central Highlands to “be prepared, be aware” as flooding is anticipated. Wind gusts near 70mph are expected along coastal and hilly areas of England and Wales, with around 30mm of heavy rain possible across the country.
