Emirates to Pioneer as the First Autism Certified Airline in the World
Emirates Airlines is on a mission to become the first airline in the world to be certified for autism services, enhancing accessibility in air travel for individuals with autism and their families.
Emirates has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to become the globe’s first Autism Certified Airline™, focusing on delivering exceptional services to customers with autism and sensory sensitivities.
The certification, which will be officially granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) in the upcoming months, involves training over 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff. This step aims to enhance the airline experience for not just individuals with autism but also their families and companions.
Commitment to Inclusive Travel
Research conducted shows that international travel can be challenging for many in the autism community due to sensory overload. A survey by AutismTravel.com highlighted that 78% of families are hesitant to travel, while 94% would take vacations if they had access to trained staff.
What Does the Autism Certified Airline™ Designation Mean?
Emirates intends to implement rigorous training standards in collaboration with IBCCES. This process includes feedback from over 14,000 individuals with disabilities, ensuring that the perspectives of the autism community are reflected in these new industry standards. The aim is to create a travel environment that is welcoming and accommodating to all travelers.
Future Services and Training
In 2025, Emirates is set to introduce various services for customers with autism, including digital sensory guides and sensory products onboard. The airline’s staff will undergo extensive training on autism awareness—an initiative that builds on previous training completed by 23,000 employees in 2023.
Collaboration for Accessibility
In April 2024, Emirates also achieved a Certified Autism Center™ designation for its Dubai Check-In facilities, furthering its commitment to accessible travel in partnership with Dubai Airports and local tourism authorities. This collective effort underscores their ambition to make Dubai the first Certified Autism Destination™ in the Eastern Hemisphere.
