Air Canada Receives First A321XLR Aircraft from Airbus

Air Canada has officially taken delivery of its inaugural A321XLR aircraft, a key component of its strategy to renew its fleet and expand operations.

Air Canada has received its first A321XLR from Airbus, marking a major milestone in the airline’s fleet modernization efforts. This aircraft, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, is designed to boost Air Canada’s operational efficiency and expand its service offerings.

The A321XLR aims to serve secondary markets with direct flights, leveraging its extensive range and improved fuel efficiency. Equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the A321XLR features a comfortable two-cabin configuration, accommodating 14 Signature Class full-flat seats and 168 economy seats. Enhanced inflight amenities include advanced entertainment, Bluetooth audio, full connectivity, and increased luggage space.

With a capability of flying up to 4,700 nautical miles, this aircraft allows Air Canada to conduct nonstop flights from Montreal and Toronto to locations like Berlin, Toulouse, and Edinburgh. Airbus has reported over 500 orders for the A321XLR model as of March 2026.

Furthermore, Air Canada currently operates a diverse fleet of 136 Airbus aircraft and has 61 additional units on order, including the newly requested A350 models. Notably, the A321XLR can utilize up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aligning with Airbus’s target to enable 100% SAF compatibility by 2030.
