Phu Quoc Airport Set to Achieve Full Automation by 2027

Phu Quoc International Airport aims to become a fully automated aviation hub by July 2027, in collaboration with Sun Group and SITA.

Phu Quoc International Airport is set to transform into a fully automated aviation hub by July 2027, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

Sun Group, a prominent Vietnamese conglomerate, has partnered with SITA to implement next-generation technology, aiming to accommodate 24 million passengers annually with the new Terminal 2, and potentially scaling up to 50 million.

The project will introduce an end-to-end suite of SITA’s airport technologies, enabling passengers to check in, select seats, print boarding passes, and drop luggage through automated systems. The terminal will feature SITA Flex Hybrid, supporting 204 common-use workstations, and SITA Local Departure Control System for operational resilience.

Travellers will utilize 150 SITA Smart Path kiosks for check-in processes and 100 Smart Path Bag Drop units for self-service baggage handling. Additionally, 38 dual-lane Smart Path Gates will facilitate automated boarding, all coordinated through SITA’s biometric technology.

Nguyen Chi Thanh, President of Sun Group, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership reflects our shared vision of elevating Vietnam’s aviation sector.”

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate aviation with Sun Group’s tourism and hospitality offerings on Phu Quoc Island. Beyond Phu Quoc, the partnership with SITA will serve as a model for future airport developments in Vietnam, including Phan Thiet and Con Dao. This expansion aligns with Sun Group’s goal to establish five airports across Vietnam, each meeting the 5-Star Skytrax standard.
