Call for Change in Himalayan Development Practices
The CP Kukreja Foundation for Design Excellence has launched a crucial white paper titled “The Future of the Himalayas: Rethinking Development and Resilience” at the India International Centre in New Delhi. This document was unveiled on April 20 and was introduced by the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu. The paper addresses complex development challenges faced by the Himalayan region through a multidisciplinary roundtable approach.
The white paper stresses the urgent need to revisit current development practices in the Himalayas, especially considering the increasing climate volatility and ecological sensitivity. It has been noted that since the 1950s, there has been a 15–20% increase in extreme rainfall events in the Indian Himalayan Region, resulting in greater risks of landslides and infrastructural strain. The findings point to a misalignment between outdated development approaches and the realities of fragile mountain ecosystems.

- Transitioning from project-focused interventions to comprehensive system-level planning.
- Incorporating scientific data into governance frameworks.
- Designing infrastructure that is attuned to the unique topography of the Himalayas, while recognizing the need for ecological carrying capacity.
